Annual Exams Q & A

What is a women’s annual exam?

Your annual well-woman exam at Prescott Women's Clinic is a checkup that focuses on preventive health — so you remain healthy today and into the future. The visit touches on various aspects of your overall well-being as a woman. The three chief goals of the exam are to:

  • Document your health habits and medical history
  • Conduct a physical exam
  • Set health goals

During your visit, you and your practitioner talk about the next steps for helping you stay healthy. Together, you decide which screenings or follow-up services are right for you.

What screenings and discussions should I expect at my annual exam?

While Prescott Women's Clinic tailors your exam to your age and medical history, you can expect your practitioner to generally cover:

Birth control

Your practitioner reviews your health history and discusses your options, which include a variety of choices, including but not limited to the birth control pill, shot, pellet implant, and IUD. Tubal ligation is a permanent birth control option.

Cancer screening

Your practitioner performs a breast exam and oftentimes a Pap test (to screen for cervical cancer) as part of your checkup. Based on your age, family history, and other health factors, they advise you about whether you need to schedule a mammogram or colonoscopy.

Health screenings

Your practitioner screens you for high blood pressure, depression, and diabetes, among other conditions. They discuss STD screening and perform testing if needed.

Weight issues

Diet and lifestyle changes affect your weight. Your practitioner discusses healthy changes to manage your weight.

Menstrual issues

Changes in your monthly cycle may signal an underlying problem. If you’re having issues with your monthly cycle, your practitioner may discuss premenstrual syndrome (PMS), irregular bleeding, heavy periods, or whatever specific issue affects you.

What happens during a women’s physical exam?

Your weight and blood pressure are checked and recorded, and you may be asked to provide a urine sample.

Your physical exam includes a breast exam and a pelvic exam with a Pap smear, which is a sample of cells taken from your cervix and sent to the lab for analysis. The exam and testing looks for signs of cervical cancer, breast cancer, and potential gynecologic problems.
